Sadhusanga Newsletter: November 16, 2009Sri Manah Siksa - Verse Eleven
"O dear mind, in order to receive the direct service of Srimati Radharani and Giridhari (Krsna), who are intoxicated with and attracted to amorous pastimes with each other, and of Their confidential and eternal associates, simply take shelter of Srila Rupa Gosvami, following his instructions of relishing the five types of ambrosial service to Lord Krsna according to proper standards, namely: worshiping, glorification, meditation, hearing, and offering obeisances [arcana, kirtana, dhyana, sravana, and pranama], and simultaneously serve Govardhana Hill.” (Verse 11) In his commentary on this verse Srila Bhaktivinoda Thakura explains the secret to attain the highest limit of perfection – direct service to Sri Sri Radha-Krsna during Their amorous pastimes. How is this accomplished? What is the procedure to attain such an exalted opportunity? Raghunatha das Gosvami answers in this verse: follow the instructions of Srila Rupa Gosvami. “In the course of time, the transcendental news of Krsna's pastimes in Vrndavana were almost lost. To enunciate explicitly these transcendental pastimes, Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu, at Prayag, empowered Srila Rupa Gosvami with the nectar of His mercy to carry out this work in Vrndavana.” (Caitanya-candrodaya-nataka) Those who have read Caitanya-caritamrta, Antya-lila 1 know that this was personally confirmed by Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu. If we ever require a little boost to ignite our enthusiasm in devotional service now and then, listening to these instructions by Raghunatha dasa Gosvami about following Rupa Gosvami, and the result of doing so, should encourage us beyond limits to read Bhakti-rasamrita-sindhu, Upadesamrta, Lalita-madhava, Vidadgha-madhava and other books by him. The worship of Govardhana Hill is also glorified, with an account of how Lord Caitanya personally gave Raghunatha das Gosvami a Govardhana shila.
